[Also in Groups XXVIII and XXX] The drum 11, Figs. 1, 2 of the first Provisional Specification, in mine winding gear is braked by a series of disc brake units 24 in arcuate arrangements on opposite sides of the drum 11 and engaging annular wearing surfaces 25 attached to each side of the drum. The units 24 may be selectively actuated in opposed pairs to control the braking.
