Abstract

694,085. Disc brakes. STRAUS, M. Dec. 24, 1951 [Jan. 11, 1951], No. 30171/51. Class 103 (i). In a brake of the type comprising discs 5 and 6 carrying friction linings 7 and 8 adapted to be spread apart into engagement with the walls of a rotatable brake drum by the action of balls 9 in inclined recesses, the movement apart of the discs 5 and 6 to produce the initial braking action is provided by an hydraulic cylinder 16 and piston 18 of annular form mounted extemally coaxially with the brake. The piston 18 and cylinder 16 actuate through sleeves 11 and 12 respectively the discs 5 and 6. Projections 13, passing through slots in the sleeve 11, connect the sleeve 12 and disc 6, which may rotate through a certain angle in each direction sufficient to bring into action the wedging effect of the balls 9.
