947,691. Aircraft arresting gear. P. B. FONDEN, and K. O. T. WALANDER. Nov. 15, 1962, No. 43282/62. Heading B7G. An arresting wire 5 for arresting a landing aeroplane is connected to a brake drum 1, 2 on each side of the runway. To centralize and stabilize the aeroplane the brake drums are connected by a synchronizing wire or chain 6 lying above the runway surface. This wire is flattened and is normally slack, thereby lying on the surface, so that an arresting hook which fails to engage the arresting wire will not engage and damage the synchronizing wire, but it is tightened by an hydraulic or pneumatic tensioning device 12 actuated by movement of the wire 6. The tensioning device also limits the maximum load on the wire 6. The synchronizing wire may alternatively pass through a channel under the runway.
