To attach a barrel gripping device, Fig. 2, to a barrel 136 the device is placed on top of the barrel with the parts as shown in Fig. 1 (not shown), and a lever 112 is pulled up towards a bracket 34 after rotating a lever 44, 46 clockwise against a spring 47. Upward movement of the lever 112 causes a cam roller 124 to pivot a tongue element 62 into engagement with a rim 140 on the barrel. A spring-loaded plunger 106 is compressed against the barrel and the anticlockwise torque thus produced on the tongue holds the lever 112 in the Fig. 2 position. Two such devices are attached to opposite sides of a barrel and interconnected by a lifting chain 134. When the barrel is raised the bracket 34 is rotated clockwise and compresses springs 61, disposed between bracket 34 and bracket 10, until a bar 52 abuts surfaces 20 of the bracket 10. The bar 52 also engages the tongue 62 holding it in engagement with the barrel. This pivotal movement of bracket 34 allows the spring 47 to rotate the lever 44, 46 anticlockwise until the portion 44 is above the lever 112. When the force on the chains is released the portion 44 abuts the lever 112 and the springs 61 overcome the spring plunger 106 and depress both the bracket 34 and the lever 112. The spring-loaded plungers now move the tongues 62 out of engagement with the barrel. The disposition of a cam face 88 may be adjusted by screws 80, 84 which open or close a slit 72. Horizontal barrels may be picked up by hooks 14.
