Abstract

892,797. Clamp fastenings. BULLOWS, W. D. Sept. 19, 1960 [Nov. 23, 1959], No. 39615/59. Class 44. In a clamp of the kind including a pair of members 7, 8 adapted to be mounted for pivotal movement relative to one another and each having a convex arcuate toothed face 18, 19 and resilient means 12, 13 for loading the members towards a position in which a rope, cable, chain or the like can be gripped between the arcuate faces, one of the arcuate faces 8 has formed thereon a projection 22 which is so shaped that when the rope, cable, chain or the like is gripped in the clamp a pull exerted on the rope, cable, chain or the like against the projection in one direction will move one or both of the members against the resilient means and allow the rope, cable chain or the like to be withdrawn from the clamp but a pull exerted on the rope, cable chain or the like in the opposite direction against the projection will cause the members to grip the rope, cable chain or the like more tightly. As shown the members 7, 8 are mounted on spigots 5, 6 which are integral with a base 4. They are retained in position by washers 10 and screws 11 The projection 22 is a lip which overlies the teeth on the member 7, the member 7 having a cut away portion 23 to accommodate the lip. Both the lip 22 and portion 23 are chamfered to facilitate the introduction of the rope, cable, chain or the like between them and the projection is also formed with a pronounced shoulder against which the rope, cable, chain or the like bears in the direction which causes the members to grip it more tightly. Each member is formed with a finger piece 25, 26 which enables the members to be moved in their releasing directions and each finger piece is shallow enough to enable the rope, cable, chain or the like to be passed underneath it. This enables a reverse pull to be exerted on the rope, cable, chain or the like without it coming into contact with the projection 22 and thereby becoming disengaged from the clamp. In a modification the two members are geared together, only one of the members is spring loaded and only one has a finger piece. In a further modification the base is a fixed part of a boat or the like.
