Abstract

886,706. Lifting-dogs for handling drums. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 6, 1960. No. 30647/60. Class 78 (4). A lifting-dog for handling drums has pin- and-slot connections 8, 12, 9, 13 (Fig. 1) between its lifting links 6, 7 and its jaws 4, 3 so that relative movement between the lifting head 18 and the jaws can operate a device for locking the jaws in the open position. In the form illustrated the jaws are pivoted at 5 to a link 21 which carries a cam 29 engaging in a slot in a member 32 depending from the head 18. The cam 29 has pins 38 (Fig. 5) by which it is turned through a right-angle when one of the pins engages a shoulder 42 in the slot 39. By this means the cam 29 is turned between the position shown in Fig. 6, in which lugs 40 on it are engaged by members 41 bordering the slot 39, and a position in which the lugs 40 are aligned with the slot so that the cam 29 is free to move to the bottom of the slot. Two sets of jaws are disposed one at each end of the drum 44 (Fig. 1 to be lifted and are joined by cross-shafts. The closure movement of the jaws is limited by pins 23, 24, and the downward movement of the jaws over a drum 44 is limited by abutments 45.
