Abstract

1,224,694. Locking devices for lifting tongs. HERBERT MORRIS-BROWN LENOX Ltd. 2 Dec., 1969 [26 March, 1969], No. 15889/69. Heading B8H. In a lifting tongs, Fig. 1, having a device for holding the jaws open and subsequently allowing them to close, of the type comprising a pivoted latch 4 which engages a cam-track 7, Fig. 3, in a member 5, the latch 4 is biased so that it remains in alignment with the cam track when the tongs are tilted. As shown, the latch 4 is biased by springs which are compressed when the latch pivots to follow the cam track 7. Alternatively, the latch may be biased by counterweights 23, 24, Fig. 6, which are pivoted upwards when the latch abuts stops 29, 29<SP>1</SP> attached thereto as it is pivoted by the cam track. Fig. 9 shows an embodiment in which a wedge bar 16 holds the jaws in the open position and is itself held in a raised position by a latching device 4, 5 when the jaws are to be closed, the block 5 being attached to the wedge bar. Fig. 10 shows an arrangement with two pairs of grippers. The latch is held in alignment with the cam track by counterweights.
