Abstract
868,451. Grabs for handling materials. PRIESTMAN BROS. Ltd. Sept. 4, 1959 [June 19, 1958], No. 19693/58. Class 78 (4). In a grab having two buckets 1, 2, Fig. 1, pivoted together at 3, the opening movement is brought about by a pair of links 8, 9, connected through a common operating member 17 which may be moved upwards by means of ropes 18, 19 which assist in the initial opening movement of the grab by pressing on the curved surfaces of plates 40, 41 which move the respective buckets and are so disposed that the length of rope between each member and respective rope anchors 26, 27 is constant during the initial opening movement. When the grab is closed the rope 18 engages the plate 40, Fig. 4, and the rope 19 engages a similar plate 41 (not shown), the plate 40 being carried by an arm 42 pivoted at 47. Thus, the length of rope between the plate 40 and the anchor 26 remains constant during the initial opening movement. The plate 40 is formed as a complete loop, which receives a roller 30 pivoted to the member 8 by a pin 12, and has a groove for engaging the rope. Each anchor comprises a wedge-shaped element 55 round which the rope passes, the element being pulled into a tapered socket 56 of a block 57. The invention may be applied to the grab shown in Specification 722,138; in this case only the member 40 is provided, this being located at a pin 9 (not shown), for co-operation with a rope 13 (not shown).
