[Also in Division E2] A gripping device for a linked loop chain comprises a body 20 provided with a pair of abutments 24, 26, having an operative position in which a trapped link 30 of the chain lies flat in a gap between them, the gap being insufficient to pass the two neighbouring links 28, 29, at one of the abutment surfaces 24, 26 being retractable to permit the passage of the neighbouring links 28, 29. As shown, the abutment surface 24 comprises a pin disposed between plates 20, 20, forming the body of the device, and the abutment surface 26 comprises a pawl pivotally mounted at 25. The pawl 26 is loaded into chain locking position by a spring 32. A further abutment surface 23 is so disposed as to cause the link 29 to lie at an inclination to the main run of the chain when the latter is under tension.
