Abstract
955,824. Fairleads; chain stops. HARLEY PATENTS (INTERNATIONAL) Ltd., and F. B. HARLEY. Oct. 11, 1960 [Oct. 12, 1959], No. 34577/69. Heading B8B. A fairlead device for a link loop chain 10-13 (Fig. 4), comprises a plate 14 having in it a cross-shaped aperture having four arms 22, 23, 24, 25, formed by two intersecting slots. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the aperture is formed in two plates 14, 15, between which a latch 31 is slidable from a position (Fig. 3) in which both slots are unobstructed, to a position in which the slot-arms 24, 25 are obstructed, thus locking the chain against movement. The latch is formed with guide slots 33 which have turned-in ends 34 which co-operate with guide pins 35 to lock the latch in each of its operative positions. In a modification (Fig. 5), the plates 14, 15 are replaced by a single plate 50 and one of the slot-arms (53) of the cross-shaped aperture is open-ended so that the chain can be slid laterally into the device. The chain is locked in the device by allowing a vertically disposed link to drop into an elongated slotarm 56 of the cross-shaped aperture. The chain is retained in this slot-arm 56 by means of a latch 59 which is moved from the position in full lines to the position in dot-dash lines. A pin 67 on the latch 59 engages a recess 68 on the plate 50 so as to prevent the arm 53 of the aperture opening when the chain is under load. Recesses 64, 64, on each side of the plate 50 serve to provide a bearing for the chain links adjacent to the link locked in the slot-arm 56. In a modification of this construction (Fig. 9, not shown), the latch 59 is dispensed with and the size of the plate 50 is enlarged so as to include two further cross-shaped apertures, each of which has an elongated locking slotarm 56 but has no open-ended slot-arm 53. In a further modification (Figs. 11 and 12, not shown), the chain is prevented from escaping from its slot-arm 56 by means of a latch which is pivotally mounted on the plate 50 by means of a rubber bush-type connection. The resilience of the rubber bush keeps the latch in engagement with the vertically disposed chain link in the arm 56 but the latch can be turned and lifted against this resilience to release the chain. In the construction shown in Fig. 15 a cross-shaped aperture 75 is formed in two spaced plates 155 between which is disposed a locking latch 154 pivotally mounted at 151 and urged into chain-locking position by a spring 156.
