uReferring tothe 'form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, I provide a lock adapted to be applied to the usual transom lifter rod I0 which is carried by a support A with the usual spring actuated locking levers Il which press against the rod I0 and normally prevent movement thereof in either direction and thus lock the transom. 'Io raise or open the transom, the spring ngers I I are pressed together and then the rod I0 shoved upwardly from the actuating member I2 shown at the lower end thereof. In devices of this kind after they have been in use for some time the locking iingers become worn or smooth and lose their locking function so that by pressing on the transom it may be readily shoved open because of the failure of the lock to hold the transom rod. i l In order to prevent such opening of the transom, I provide a safety lock which in :general consists of a saddle I3 adapted to hook over the lifter rod 110.' andfprovidedewith a setting device preferablyfin the fo'rm of a Vset.` screwA IllV carried :by'the` saddle. a'nclnadaptedto clamp thesaddle "onto therod .and xedly hold it in place. i yAssuming .the saddle is placed in the position ..5 shown in'lig.` l,the` .transomcannot be opened either by Apushing onit or lifting'on the :rod I2, evtnfthough-` themain lock Arfailsfto hold.' Thus the ldevice may be applied to the rod in either way and act as a lock.
Referring now to the form shown in Fig. 4, 40 this consists of an integral unit comprising the saddle I8 carrying the extension I9 and lateral arm 20 which serves to prevent disengagement of the saddle when the set screw 2I is loosened. This device, like the rst form, may be applied 45 with the set screw on either the right or theV left hand side of the lifter rod.
Referring to the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the saddle 22 and holding member 23 are of like construction, that is, each adapted to hook 50 over the rod I0, and are' connected by a link 2li.` In this form of my invention the set screw 25 is threaded through the link 24 and is adapted 'to engage the side of the frame of the main lock A to hola the safety lock mV position. This form of the device, like the other two, may be applied either from the right or from the left side. This form of the invention may be formed up from sheet metal or cast as desired.
Referring now to the form of invention shown in Figs. 7 to 9, in this case I provide yielding means in the form of a spring for retaining or holding the saddle 26 upon the rod I 0 when the set screw 21 is loosened. In this form the saddle 26 carriesa plate 28 upon which a spring 29 is mounted. The parts are so proportioned that the device may be applied to a lifter rod I by simply pulling the free end of the springv 29 outwardly far enough so.V that the rod l0 will slide in between the base portion 30 of the spring and the edge 3| of the saddle and then over into the position as shown in these three figures. 'Ihe spring 29 is then released and yieldingly holds the lock on the rod. To force it in position the set screw 2l is merely turned to hold the parts together.- When kthe set screw 2l is released, the rod IB Vis free to slide in the saddle 26 so that the rod I D may be raised and lowered to open and close the transom. 'I'he lock may also be readily removed from the rod lll when desired. Also it may be applied with the holding spring 29 either to the right or to the left of the rod ID. Or it may be applied above or belowV the main lock A so as to act as a. stop to prevent closing or opening of the transom respectively.
Ifclaim: 1. A safety lock for transom lifters comprising a-saddle for receiving the lifter rod, a setting device for i'lxedly securing the saddle to the rod, and means carried by the saddle to prevent the saddle from disengaging from the rod when the 'setting device is. released.

A safety lock for. transom lifters comprising a saddle for receiving the lifter rod, a setting device `for xedly securing the saddle to the rod adjacent one end of Va 'sliding support for the rod, and means extending from the saddle for positioning around the otlfierend of the supportl 4. yA safety lock for transom lifters comprising a saddle for receiving the lifter rod, a setting device for xedly securing the saddle to the rod, and yielding means carried by the saddle for engaging the rod to hold the saddle on the rod when the setting device is released.

A safety lock for transom lifters comprising avsaddle having a pair of hook-like shaped end portions for receiving the lifter rod Vwith one of said end portions positioned above and below -a sliding support for the lifter rod, an integral connecting bar between said end portions, and a setting device on said bar for xedly securing the saddle to the rod. y
8. Avsafety lock for transom lifters comprising a saddle having a hook-like shape with an enlarged integral body portion serving as the shank for the hook whereby the saddle may be readily applied to and removed from the lifter rod, a setting device for xedly securing the saddle to the rod, and a spring arm lying in the plane of the lifter rodand mounted at the rear edge of the shank for frictionally engaging the rod to hold the saddle when the setting device is released.
9. A safety lock for transom lifters comprising a saddle having a hook-like shape with an enlarged integral body portion serving as the shank for the hook whereby the saddle may be-readily applied to and removed from the lifter rod, a thumb screw threadably secured in the shank for iixedly securing the saddle to the rod, and a springV arm mounted at the rear edge of the shank for frictionally engaging the rod to hold the saddle when the thumb screw is released.
