Abstract

1,238,218. Boring earth. BYRON JACKSON Inc. 17 Dec., 1968 [26 Dec., 1967], No. 60035/ 68. Heading E1F. A pipe elevator comprises pipe supporting flappers 32, 39 linked-as by link 49-so that they open and close together, and latch means to lock the flappers in a closed position. The flappers are closed by a handle 72 pivotal between stop surfaces 77 and 79 and having a catch 74 normally engageable under hook 85 when the flappers are closed. However plunger 88 can be pushed within bracket 84 to extend outwardly therefrom to prevent the hook retaining the catch. The plunger is held in the extended position by a pin 92 resting in a slot 89. The flappers are mounted on a base 12 rotatable within the body 11 of the elevator. The base may be prevented from rotating by a spring pressed plunger 57 being located between lugs 64 or 67 on either side of the base. Body 11 has holes 93 and 94 for insertion of tools to cant the elevator onto its side for the insertion of a horizontal pipe.
