Abstract

1,271,250. Boring earth and rock. BYRON JACKSON Inc. 17 July, 1969 [30 July, 1968], No. 36190/69. Heading E1F. A well pipe elevator 26 is tilted by means 68 to engage a generally horizontal pipe 31. The means 68 comprise a pipe engaging saddle 75 pivoted at 72 to posts 69, 71. The elevator is lifted on links 25, 36 to engage the saddle 75 with the pipe. Continued lifting of the elevator causes the posts and elevator to pivot at 72 relative to the saddle, Fig. 5, so that the pipe enters a socket 38, engaging a finger 65 as it does so, to close a door 41 which is latched by members 55, 58. The pipe slides through the socket 38 until a pipe joint 30 is engaged, whereupon the saddle swings back to its original position under the action of a counterweight 74.
