1 Claim.
This invention relates to clamping and holding devices designed primarily for clamping and holding fruit jars while the usual screw caps thereof are being removed or positioned thereon.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will insure a uniform pressure being directed to the fruit jar held in the device, thereby reducing the possibilities of breaking the jar, during the clamping operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamping means which may be operated to effectively hold the jar, by the operation of a lever controlled by one hand, leaving the other hand free to position the screw cap on the jar.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a clamping jaw which will automatically release its grip on the jar being clamped thereby, when the operating lever is moved to its inactive 20 position.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of con- 25 struction hereinafter described and claimed, it
being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein described, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a jar holding and clamping device constructed in accordance with the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the device includes a bracket indicated by the reference character 5, the bracket being in the form of a plate, adapted to be secured to a supporting surface. This plate is formed with slots extend- 50 ing from the upper edge thereof for the reception of the bolts 6 carried by the frame 1 of the clamp. The frame 1 includes a bar 8, and a bar 9 extended at right angles to the bar, 8, as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawings. The reference character 10 indicates a curved jaw, which has connection with the bars II, that in turn are formed integral with the bars 8 and 9.
Secured to the curved jaw l0 and depending from a point substantially intermediate the ends thereof, is an arm indicated by the reference character l2, which arm has a right angled lower end portion It to which the plate I4 is secured, the plate providing a support to engage the bottom of the jar clamped by the device, and hold the jar in a position to be clamped.
This plate M is provided with a layer of padding material indicated by the reference character 55, when a jar to be gripped by the device is positioned on the plate I4.
At the outer end of the bar 8, is an eye indicated by the reference character it, through which the reduced end of the flexible movable jaw ll, extends, the reduced end of the movable jaw being secured in position within the eye, by means of the rivet l8.
The opposite end of the flexible movable jaw I7, is bent upon itself, providing a bearing for the bolt is, which bolt extends through the eye of the operating rod 2|. As clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawings, the free end of the bar 9, extends an appreciable distance beyond the bar I I, associated therewith, where it is provided with an opening through which the operating rod 2! extends. The operating rod ft is provided with a plurality of openings 22, for the reception of the cotter pins 23, which are connected by the chain 24. Cams are secured to the outer surface of the bar 9, and are adapted to cooperate with the operating bar 28, which is provided with an opening through which the operating rod 2| extends. It will of course be understood that the cotter pins are positioned in a manner as shown by the drawings, to hold the operating bar 26 in a predetermined position on the rod 2!, to the end that the flexible movable jaw, may be adjusted with respect to the stationary jaw for clamping jars of various diameters.
A coiled spring indicated by the reference character 21, is disposed between the free end of the flexible movable jaw and inner surface of the extended portion of the bar 9, so that when the flexible movable jaw I1 is moved to a clamping position, the spring will be placed under tension to force the jaws apart, when the operating bar 26 is moved to its inactive position, or to the position shown by Figure 3 of the drawings.
Washers such as indicated at 28 are provided on the operating rod 2|, and may be employed in accurately adjusting the flexible movable jaw with respect to the stationary jaw.

With the jar tightly gripped between the jaws of the device, it is obvious that a suitable tool may be applied to the cover to position or remove the cover without the necessity of holding the jar.
I claim:
A jar holding device comprising a bracket, a supporting plate held under the bracket, a curved stationary jaw formed on the bracket, a flexible jaw pivotally connectedto the bracket adjacent to the stationary jaw and adapted to extend around a jar resting on the supporting plate, a bolt connected to one end of the flexible bracket and having a plurality of openings formed therein, said bolt extending through an opening in the bracket, cam members on the bracket, an operating bar having an opening through which the bolt extends, a cotter key adapted to be positioned in'an opening of the bolt and against which said operating bar engages, securing the operating bar in its positions of adjustment on the bolt, a coiled spring on the bolt and resting against the bracket, and said operating bar adapted tomove over the cam members whereby the flexible jaw is moved against the action of the spring to grip a jar and hold the jar against movement.
