Abstract

1,007,680. Locking devices for lifting dogs. LIFTING GEAR PRODUCTS (ENGINEERING) Ltd. May 4, 1964 [May 15, 1963], No. 19281/63. Heading B8H. A lifting tongs, Fig. 1, is held open or allowed to close on a load 56 by a rotatable member 30 with abutments 38, Fig. 6, which engage shoulders 46 on a gate member 32 attached to a jaw 10. When jaws 10, 12 abut the ground a pawl 48 adjustable by a stop 52 rotates the member 30 so that the abutments 38 are vertical. In this position the abutments pass between the shoulders 46 as the tongs are lifted thereby allowing the jaws to close. When the load is set down the member 30, which is restrained by a ball detent, is again rotated to a position in which the jaws are held open. In a second embodiment, Fig. 7, the rotatable member 30 is mounted on a pivot 14 for the jaws 10, 12 and the abutment 32 is attached to a liner 20. Abutment members 38 may be provided on one side only of the member 30 to engage a single plate 40, Fig. 6, instead of a pair of plates as shown.
