In a pair of slab tongs with jaws 1, 2, which are closed when a bar 5 is raised and opened when a bar 6 is raised, links 15, 16 interconnecting toggles 11, 13 and 12, 14 can change in length so that the upper and lower beams may move skew to each other to allow one pair of jaws to close more than the other pair. Each link has two parts which slide relative to each other and are restrained by helical springs which abut collars fixed on the parts of each link.
