Abstract

813,690. Lifting dogs. BRESLAV, J. Oct. 25, 1955 [Feb. 28, 1955], No. 30507/55. Class 78(4). A pair of bars 11, 28 carrying the jaws 13, 27 of a grapple are each pivoted directly to each of two levers 16, 13 so that the bars move longitudinally to close the jaws when the levers are turned about the pivots. As illustrated the levers 16, 13 form parts of bell cranks 14, 17 connected at their upper ends to links 21, 22 by which the grapple is suspended so that the weight of the load tends to close the grapple. The bars 10 and 28, the links 14 and 17, and the links 21 and 22 may each comprise a pair of spaced plates. The jaw 13 is rigid with the bar 11 while the jaw 25 is pivoted to the bar 27 and the jaws in the embodiment illustrated are shaped to grip the periphery of a coil. Preferred proportions are mentioned in the Specification and are such that the pivots 18, 29, 15, 30 form a trapezium with the sides formed by the links 16, 19 equal. Chains may replace the links 21, 22 and either of the arms 17, 14 may be omitted. The grapple may be fitted with a locking mechanism 35 as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,337,177.
