Abstract

953,261. Gripping and lifting stacks of bricks. BICKERSTAFF Inc. April 12, 1962 [May 1, 1961], No. 14203/62. Heading B8H. A lifting dog for a stack of building units 5, Fig. 3, comprising jaws 27, 31, pivoted together at 21, has an attachment member 16 for the lifting gear 12, 13 which slides along a member 23 as lifting takes place so that the stack does not tilt. The jaws are locked in an open position, Fig. 2, by a pivoted catch 41 released by a handle 38 and a rod 37. One of the wheels 51 of the sliding member 16 engages in a recess 54 when the lifting dog is in the unloaded condition, thereby ensuring that the jaws 27, 31 remain vertical. The position which the sliding member 16 adopts during lifting may be adjusted by a screw stop 57. The top of the stack is stabilized by a plate 43 and screws 44. In a second embodiment a lifting frame 72, Fig. 5, is suspended by a sliding member 69 similar to member 16. The bottom row of units B is arranged with spaces which permit the entry of tines 78 carrying gripping elements 91. These gripping elements are mounted on shafts 81 which are rotated in the tines by linkages 88, 82, Fig. 4, attached to a crossmember 84. A manually operated lever 98 is depressed to raise the cross-member 84 and urge the hard rubber elements 91 into engagement with the units. The handle 98 has an overcentre action which holds the elements in the gripping position. Specification 693,791 is referred to.
