Abstract
817,796. Lifting dogs. MOORE Ltd., W. & E. July 18, 1957 [July 18, 1956], No. 22225/56. Class 78 (4). A pair of grab dogs 1, 2 are alternately locked apart or released to pick up an object, by a cam wheel 4 and pawl 6 mounted on relatively movable parts of the dogs. The teeth of the wheel 4 are alternately straight as at a or hooked as at b to engage the nose 8 of the pawl. When the jaws are lowered open as in Fig. 1, they splay apart on touching the ground and the nose 8 moves over the tooth a. On raising the grab by the shackle 16 the wheel 4 is rotated through 60 degrees before the nose 8 clears the teeth a and the jaws are allowed to close. On the next lowering and raising operation the parts will be returned to the position shown, with the dogs looked apart. Wheel 4 has a spring and friction device on its axle to prevent accidental rotation and the pawl 6 a spring 13 and stop 14 to ensure it takes its correct position. The positions of the wheel and pawl may be interchanged, or they may be mounted respectively on a dog arm 10 and an operating link 11. A series of links 11 may be provided or form a lazy tongs mechanism between the dogs and the shackle 16.
