Abstract
593,118. Lifting-dogs. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION, Ltd., and BENSON, R. C. June 11, 1945, No. 14792. [Class 78(iv)] A gripping device in which the raising of the upper part of the device relatively to the lower part causes the jaws to grip and which auto matically sets itself in the free and lockec positions as it is alternately hoisted and lowered is characterised by a vertical link F whict is suspended in a slot e<1> in a frame E and is movable from one end to the other of the slot so that it drops into a notch at either end, the link being adaptable to engage a hook g3 on a lower member to hold the gripping member in the gripping position. A shackle A carries a shaft B on which work a pair of toggle levers C, D the lower parts of which terminate in gripping jaws c<1>, d<1>. The frame E is also mounted on the shaft B. A hook member G having two recesses g<2>, g<3> is carried by a boss g<1>, mounted on a pin H which passes through the lower limbs of the toggle levers. When the jaws c<1>, d<1> contact the article to be lifted the jaws open and the bight of link F enters recess g<2>. On lifting, the link F is guided up the incline between the two recesses g<2> and g<3> so that it engages a hook on member G and prevents the jaws from closing. On the weight being laid down, link F slides down into the larger recess g<2> allowing the jaws to close.
