The invention relates to a safety grip and more particularly to what is generally termed bull dog clamps.
The primary object "of the invention is the provision of a clamp of this character wherein horizontally disposed Work can be firmly and securely gripped thereby for the hoisting of the same from said horizontally disposed position, the clamp being a refinement over the subjectmatter of Letters Patent No. 2,308,485, issued January 19, 1943.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a clamp of this character which is safe in that it will positively grip the work particularly sheet metal plates when at rest in a horizontal position, or approximately so.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a clamp of this character which involves detail structural set up to assure simplicity of operation.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a clamp of this character which is simple in construction, strong, durable, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail,
illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Figure l is a side elevation of the clamp constructed in accordance with the invention and in open position.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the clamp in gripping position.
Figure 4 is an edge elevation thereof.
Figure is a top plan view.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally the clamp constructed in accordance with the invention, and involves a substantially horseshoe shaped yoke or head B having spaced parallel side cheeks I0, these being joined by cross rivets II and said yoke or head is provided with a mouth opening I2 for accommodating work, the latter indicated by dotted lines in Figures 1 and 3 by way of the reference character C. Fitting the mouth opening I2 is a stationary jaw I3 having the roughened work engaging surface I4, while disposed between the cheeks ID at the opening l2 and opposite the said jaw I4 is a swinging jaw I5. This jaw I2 cooperates with the jaw I4 for the clamping of the work C therebetween on the approach of said jaw l5 to the jaw I4. The jaw i5 is pivoted at I6 for swinging movement.
Rearwardly of the mouth opening I2 and arranged between the cheeks I9 is a swinging slotted link II, it being pivoted at I 8 between the said cheeks I0, and this link I1 is formed with a stop projection IS in the path of an abutment 29 mounted in the cheeks ID for disposition in the path of the stop projection I9 so as to limit the swing of the link I! in one direction.
Between the movable jaw I5 and the link I1 is a throw link 2|, its connection with the jaw I5 is had by the pivot 22 and its connection with the link I! is had by the pivot 23' working in the slot 24 in said link I'I.
Loosely connected to the pivot 23 is a shackle 25 which is designed for connection with a hoist cable so that through the latter the clamp can be operated for gripping work in the mouth opening I2 and hoisting it from a horizontal or substantially horizontal position as should be obvious.
In the workin of the clamp the link I1 under pull upon a cable connected to the shackle 25 throws the stop projection I9 against the abutment 20 and assuming a piece of work C between the jaws I 4 and I5 when the stop projection I9 strikes the abutment the link 2| will be caused to travel in the slot 24 in a direction whereby the jaw l5 will move against the work C and thus firmly clamp the latter in the head B and when a continuous pull upon the hoisting cable is had, the piece of work C will be elevated from a horizontal position to a vertical position and to the desired height as may be determined.
What I claim is:
l. A clamp of the character described for suspension from a hoisting cable to lift Work edgewise when in a substantially horizontal position comprising a head having a mouth opening therein for receiving the work, a stationary jaw in the mouth opening, a movable jaw pivoted to the head and cooperating with the stationary jaw for the clamping of the work, a link pivoted to the head and having an elongated slot, a stop on the link, an abutment on the head to be engaged by the stop, and a throw link pivoted to the movable jaw and slidably fitting the slot in said link.
2. A clamp of the character described for suspension from a hoisting cable to lift work edgewise when in a substantially horizontal position comprising a, head having a mouth opening therein for receiving the work, a stationary jaw in the mouth opening, a movable jaw pivoted to the head and cooperating with the stationary jaw for the clamping of the work, a link pivoted to the head and having an elongated slot, a stop on the link, an abutment on the head to be engaged by the stop, a throw link pivoted to the movable jaw and slidably fitting the slot in'said link, and a shackle having engagement with the connection of the throw link with the slot in the first mentioned link.
