In a lifting-dog for metal plates which has fixed and movable jaws 17, 18, the movable jaw 18 is urged into engagement with the plate by a spring 30 extending between a point 31 on an operating link 24 and a pivot axis 27 of a cam 26. The latter, which is rotated by a lever 28, locks the movable jaw in an open position by bearing on a cam surface 25 on the link 24. The lever 28 may be remotely operated by a cable.
