Abstract
924,854. Sealing-tools. SIGNODE STEEL STRAPPING CO. Feb. 22, 1960 [Feb. 24, 1959], No. 6215/60. Class 146 (2). A tool for crimping overlapped strap ends, which may be surrounded by a seal, comprises jaw members 12, 13 pivoted between side plates 10, 11 operated by a similarly pivoted handle 16 and is provided with latch means which prevent opening of the jaws unless a full crimping stroke has been made. The latch 31 is spring-urged to a position to engage a stop pin 26 to prevent links 21 being raised by the handle 16 to open the jaws 12<SP>1</SP>, 13<SP>1</SP>, but the latch may be held in a released position by a detent pawl 37 which is also urged by a spring so that its tooth 38 tends to engage a pin 36 on the latch. The arrangement is such that from the mid-position shown the jaws cannot be opened unless the crimping stroke is completed when a cam face 44 on the handle forces the latch 31 to its released position, allowing the tooth 38 to engage and hold the pin 36 so that the latch does not arrest the pin 26 as the handle is moved to its fully-open position. As this latter position is approached, the crimping jaw member 13 engages a cam 39 on the detent pawl 37 to release it from the latch which is thus freed and can engage the pin 26 until a further crimping stroke is completed.
