A tool for crimping overlapped strap ends, which may be surrounded by a seal, comprises jaw members 12, 13 pivoted between side plates operated by a similarly pivoted handle 20 and is provided with latch means which prevent opening of the jaws unless a full crimping stroke has been made. A latch plate 42 is connected by a toggle bolt 38 to a mounting plate 14. A spring 39 biases the toggle to positions on either side of a dead centre line from the latch pivot 41 in one of which a detent 48 engages an end 27<SP>1</SP> of a link pin 27 to prevent the upward movement, by the handle 20, of a crosshead 24 to open the jaws. From the intermediate position shown with the toggle bolt 38 being to the left of the centre line its spring 39 will force the detent 48 into the path of the pin 27 until at the completion of a crimping stroke a cam surface 20<SP>1</SP> of the handle engages a roller 46. to force the lafch plate over the centre line. The detent 48 is now out of the path of the end 27<SP>1</SP> of the pin 27 so that the jaws can be opened. As the fully open position is approached a cam surface 45 on the crosshead 24 engages the roller 46 to force the latch 42 past the centre line to cause the detent 48 to prevent re-opening of the jaws until a further stroke is completed.
