Crimping pliers comprise a body 12, a stationary jaw 40 supported on the body by pins 42, 44 the pin 44 acting as a pivot for the movable jaw 38, a pair of toggle links 50, 52 connecting the jaws, a cam 20 for operating the toggle the cam being provided with ratchet teeth 30, a movable handle 16 mounted on the body, a spring actuated pawl 24 connected to the movable handle for operating the ratchet teeth, a spring pressed pawl 32 mounted on the body and engaging successive ratchet teeth 30 for supporting the ratchet teeth while the pawl 24 is disengaged upon movement of the handle, the rotating cam 20 causing the toggle to close the jaws and means for enabling the toggle to be returned to the starting position and the jaws to be opened after being fully closed. The movable handle 16 is pivoted to the body 12 at 18, the cam 20 being mounted on the pin 18. The cam is fixed by pins 21 to a ratchet 22 which carries the teeth 30. The toggle links 50, 52 are joined together by pivot pin 56 which also supports a follower 58 in contact with the cam 20. The link 50 is extended to form an arm 60 which is connected to the body 12 by a spring 62, the follower 58 being caused thereby to continuously engage the cam. To reduce the impact of the toggle moving from fully open to fully closed position, i.e. the action of the follower 58 passing from position 68 on the cam to position 70, a damping means consisting of a friction band 72 is provided. One end of the band is pinned at 74 to the body 12 the other end being connected to a spring 76 which is also anchored to the body 12. A modification of the damping means consists in providing a triangular track on the cam and a spring biased roller which rides in the track. Another modification of the damping means consists in providing the cam with a pin which engages the toggle to control the movement of the links with respect to the cam.
