Abstract

1,191,341. Spanners. WILKINSON SWORD Ltd. 1 Feb., 1968 [4 Feb., 1967], No. 5479/67. A hand-tool e.g. adjustable spanner, comprises a variable-position pivot whose position is determined by its abutment with a multiple abutment element. A pivot pin 20 secured to an integral handle-jaw 10, 12 is slidable in a slot 21 in a second integral handle-jaw 11, 13 the length of the slot being adjusted by a stepped cam 22 normally biased in such a way as to limit the slot to a length corresponding to minimum closure of the jaws 12, 13. The cam is so biased by a leaf spring 32 actuing on a lever 27 having a pin 26 co-operating with a slot 25 in the cam. The force of the spring may be compensated, in use of the tool, by depression of a button 29 at the end of the lever remote from the cam, whereby the position of the cam alters and the length of the slot 21 is increased. Ends of the handles remote from the jaws are biased apart by leaf springs 33, but the extent of their opening is limited by a stop arrangement 34.
