[Also in Group XXXIV] A torsion cable 8 in a conduit 31 is connected to an operating handle 9 through an irreversible transmission of the type comprising a coil spring frictional locking device 22 arranged so that when the handle drives the cable, clockwise or anticlockwise, the frictional lock is automatically released but if the cable reacts, clockwise or anticlockwise, on the handle the frictional locking grip is increased. As shown, the handle 9 is connected through a ball detent 17 to a drive member 14 rotatable in a fixed casing 10. A drive tag 19-20 (see Fig. 4) loosely mounted on the member 14 lies with clearance in a slot 21 therein and engages a slot in a rotatable member 26 secured to the cable 8, thereby coupling the cable 8 to the member 14 with lost motion. The spring 22 surrounds the member 14 and has inturned ends 23, 24, Fig. 3, engaging between the tag 20 and the shoulders of the slot 21. The coils of the spring 22 frictionally engage the interior of the fixed casing 10. On rotation of the member 14 by the handle 9, one or other shoulder of the slot 21 engages the respective spring end 23 or 24 and contracts the spring coils to release the frictional lock and then rotates the cable 8 through the tag 20. Torsional reaction of the cable, however, acts through the tag 20 to expand the spring coils and increase the frictional lock. In a modification the cable is driven through bevel gearing from a sleeve connected with lost motion to a handle rotating on a fixed spindle which is frictionally gripped by a surrounding locking spring, the spring being expanded to release the lock as the lost motion is taken up when the handle is operated. In other modifications the handle operates through epicyclic or other gearing.
