Abstract

884,593. Flexible shafts. FLEXIBLE DRIVES (GILMANS) Ltd. July 8, 1960 [July 8, 1959], No. 23420/59. Class 80 (2). A flexible shaft 1 driving a hand tool, pump, &c., is slidden axially into engagement with the shaft of the tool &c. 5, e.g. by means of a tongue- and-slot connection 4, 3, a casing 6 surrounding the flexible shaft carrying at its end a ferrule 7 comprising a cylindrical extension slotted to form resilient jaws 10 shaped at their ends as inwardly projecting teeth 11, a spigot 12 on the tool having a groove 13 receiving the teeth when the tongue-and-slot &c. are engaged and a locking sleeve 14 surrounding the ferrule then being slidden axially to hold the jaws in position. Movement of the locking sleeve 14 in the release direction is limited by a flange 15 at the end of the ferrule 7, and as a modification a helical compression spring surrounding the ferrule may be provided between the flange and the locking sleeve to bias the latter over the jaws 10. A key or spline connection may be provided to prevent relative rotation between the casing 6 of the flexible shaft 1 and the body of the tool 5.
