Abstract

1490253 Resilient couplings R JORN 8 May 1975 19518/75 Heading F2U A resilient shaft coupling between a shaft 9 and an outer member 8 having an inner cylindrical surface comprises a rubber body having, at at least one end (both as shown in Fig. 2) inner and outer metal sleeves 4, 5, 6 and 7 vulcanized to it, these sleeves having been moved axially to expand the rubber body to grip the outer member 8 and contract it, at its inner periphery, to grip the shaft 9, the metal sleeves being secured in position, in the embodiment of Fig. 2, by circlips 10 and 11 and shoulders 13 and 14. The circlip 11 may be replaced by a further shoulder on the shaft and circlip 10 and shoulder 13 may be turned over ends of an outer sleeve (Fig. 4, not shown). The rubber body may have a metal sleeve within it, there may be two bodies pressed against one another and the shaft need not have a cylindrical surface, all of these alternatives being shown in Fig. 18. The metal sleeves may have axial slots. Sleeves 4 and 5 may have an outer rubber coating and sleeves 6 and 7 an inner rubber coating, to increase frictional grip. The inner sleeve may have an axially extending inwardly projecting portion which engages a groove in the shaft for positive rotational connection of sleeve and shaft (Figs. 19 and 20, not shown). A member may be connected to a ball-shaped end of a shaft by a coupling as shown in Fig. 21 where a closure member 97 is formed at one end, there being two rubber bodies, 92, 93 in this embodiment.
