Abstract
1447078 Mounting universal joints on shafts GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 1 Nov 1974 [8 Nov 1973] 51781/73 Addition to 1445094 Heading F2U Axial withdrawal of a shaft 10 from the inner member 14 of a constant velocity ratio joint is prevented by a retaining element 17 which has a first portion 18 releasably trapped between abutments 19, 20 on the shaft and joint member and a second portion 26 projecting from the open end of the joint member for manipulation. The end portion 16 of the shaft may have splines 28 co-operating with splines 29 on the joint member. The retaining element maybe a split sleeve of metal or plastics, the bead 18 being radially contractible clear of the abutment 23 by manipulation of the portion 26 by hand or tool. In a modification, the bead 18 is divided into segments supported on independently movable fingers projecting from the open end of the joint member. In a further modification, gaps in the bead 18 provide parts which correspond with gaps in the abutment to permit axial passage of the retaining element without radial contraction.
