In a drum display device, each drum 1, Figs. 1 and 2, carries a coded array of slots 2a arranged on four annular tracks for photoelectric sensing and in operation each drum is frictionally driven from a shaft 9 by a clutch 10 until agreement is attained between signals representing a desired position of the drum and signals representing the actual position of the drum, whereupon a solenoid 4 is energized which co-operates with a projection 6 on the drum to stop it in the desired position.
