[Also in Group XXX] A grab forming part of a fuel element charge/ discharge mechanism and adapted for lowering into fuel element passages in a reactor core comprises a body 1 guided by lugs 2, 3, 51 engaging channels in a passage and suspended by a pair of cables 4, 5. The cables are oppositely wound round a pair of pulleys 6, 7 rigidly mounted on a shaft 8 whereby synchronous movement of the cables in the same direction causes raising or lowering of the body 1 and the shaft 8 does not rotale whereas differential movement of the cables causes the shaft rotation and the grab 27 is rotated by a further shaft 25 to engage or disengage the carrier 38 of a fuel element 50. The motion of shaft 8 is transmitted to shaft 25 through gears 9, 10, 12, 13 and a pin 29 on the gear 13 which enters a slotted arm 19 mounted on a shaft 18, a roller 16 on an arm 17 simultaneously entering a recess 30 in a wheel 15 thereby permitting rotation of the shaft 18, A gear sector 20 on the shaft 18 drives a bevel gear 21 on a shaft 22 connected via a spring coupling 24 to the shaft 25. Movement of the shaft 18 in such a direction that roller 16 would leave wheel 15 is prevented by a stop, Fig. 2 (not shown), which engages the arm 19. The frame-like carrier 38 is guided by the channels of the core passage, the top horizontal bar 37 being engaged by the grab claws 35, 36 which are lowered and then rotated to lie beneath the bar. The cables 4, 5 pass over idler pulleys 39, 41 on to winding pulleys 40, 42, the differential movement being performed by a motor 49 driving bevel wheels 46, 47 through a bevel 48. The wheels 46, 47 are freely mounted on a shaft 44 and have fixed thereto arms 43, 45, respectively, carrying the pulleys 39, 41, whereby rotation of the bevel 48 causes differential movement of the arms so as to lengthen one cable and shorten the other.
