Abstract
879,528. Television. A.E.I.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. Dec. 19, 1957 [Jan. 9, 1957], No. 871/57. Class 40(3) [Also in Group XL(a)] A television camera 3 combined with a grab or tongs 18 for lowering down a fuel element channel in a nuclear reactor for retrieving broken fuel element particles is enclosed in a casing 1 suspended by a flexible hose 5 having an electric supply cable 5A and means for the passage of coolant gas. The tongs 18 are pivoted at 19 on a plate 15 detachably secured to the camera (Fig. 3, not shown) and are actuated by a motor 7 through a pinion 25 on a spindle 9. The pinion 25 drives an annular gear 24 rotatable on the plate 15 and co-operating with a bevel wheel 20A on a spindle 20 to rotate a nut 21 having left and right hand threads whereby rods 22 pivoted to the tongs are moved axially. The plate 15 is rotatable about the camera axis by a further motor 7 driving a pinion 13 through a spindle 8, the pinion 13 meshing with a gear 14 rotatable on the camera 3. To prevent actuation of the tongs when the plate 15 is rotated a clutch 26 is disengaged; alternatively, both motors may run to provide a compensating rotation of the spindle 9. In this embodiment the casing 1 has diametrically opposite ribs 2 (Fig. 2, not shown) receiving the spindles 8, 9 and intended for reception in corresponding grooves in the walls of the fuel element channel.
