Abstract

909,247. Releasable fastenings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 29, 1961 [April 8, 1960], No. 12535/60. Class 44. A fastening for releasably securing together two members, comprises a stud mounted on one member 31 and adapted for engagement in a socket 30 secured to the second member, the stud comprising an outer hollow cylindrical member 11 containing a second cylindrical member 13 and a spindle 14, each of which is movable independently relative to the outer member 11 under the control of springs 21, 22. Mounted in the members 11 and 13 respectively are balls 17 and 18, and when the stud is engaged in the socket the balls 17 are urged outwardly by the member 13 to engage in a groove in the socket, as shown in Fig. 2. In order to release the stud from the socket, finger grips 25 on a collar 24 are utilized to pull the member 13 towards the bracket 11 against the action of spring 21, this resulting in the balls 17 being freed from the socket 30, and the balls 18 being brought into register with a groove 28 in the member 11. Simultaneously the spindle 14 moves upwards under the action of spring 22, and the enlarged portion 16 of the spindle holds the balls 18 in the groove 28. On re-inserting the stud into the socket, the spindle 14 is automatically depressed, releasing the member 13 which then moves upwards under the action of spring 21 to urge the balls 17 towards their locking positions.
