Abstract

880,704. Ratchet clutches. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 29, 1958 [Dec. 30, 1957], No. 41906/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XVI] A belt-driven toothed wheel 21 on a shaft 22 drives a loose sleeve 26 through a coiled spring 30. The sleeve 26 can be clutched to drive a gear 38 by a spring 41 held by a clamp 42 on the sleeve and caused to frictionally drive the gear 38 when a roller 44 forces the spring against a hub portion 39. A spring 47 tends to drive the shaft 12 in the opposite direction and to prevent it from reaching an excessive speed a gear 46 is meshed with a gear 147 having a hub 149 connected by a spring 150 to a member 148 fast on the shaft 22. The arrangement is such that if the gear 147 tends to rotate faster than the shaft 22 the spring 150 clutches it to the member 148 to retard the speed. Specification 873,920 is referred to.
