Abstract

921,660. Reactor control rods. NUCLEAR POWER PLANT CO. Ltd. May 25, 1961 [June 2, 1960], No. 19511/60. Class 39 (4). A control rod 9 hangs from one end of a chain or other flexible support 8 which passes over a driving pulley 7; the other end of the chain hangs inside the reactor. A stop 10 which can engage a shock absorber in a shield plug is fastened to the other end. The pulley is driven by a motor in a standpipe through a freewheel coupling 11 which disconnects the motor when the stop strikes the shock absorber; the motor and transmission can be removed from the standpipe as a unit. If the rod is not to be used for rapid shut-down the pulley may be driven by a worm shaft and wheel.
