Abstract

797,350. Cam steering mechanism. CAM GEARS, Ltd. Oct. 20, 1955 [Nov. 25, 1954], No. 34259/54. Class 80 (3). In vehicle steering gear wherein a cam 4 engages one or more followers 3 mounted in roller bearings 5 in a rocker arm 1, a freewheel device comprising rollers 8 allows the follower 3 to rotate freely in the direction corresponding to when the cam is driving the follower but prevents reverse rotation of the follower 3 in order to increase the friction in the gear when the follower drives the cam and thus damp the transmission of road shocks back through the the gear. The bearing rollers 5 are mounted in a housing 6 secured in the arm 1 and are axially held by a non-rotatable flanged ring 9 which surrounds the freewheel balls or rollers 8. The latter are located in tapered recesses formed by flats on the follower peg 3, and may be spring- loaded. In a modification the freewheel rollers 8 engage an extension of the housing 6 and are spaced from the bearing rollers 5 by a separator ring. In power steering gear the freewheel is arranged to operate in the reverse direction so that the increased friction is employed to damp the power steering.
