Abstract
878,104. Reservoir pens. BARTHE, E., RIEPE, H., and DITZE, K.-H., [trading as RIEPE-WERK.]. Sept. 23, 1958 [Nov. 29, 1957; Feb. 21, 1958], No. 30302/58. Class 146(3). In a reservoir pen of which the reservoir comprises a removable ink cartridge clamped in between two detachably connected parts of the pen barrel, the cartridge has a closure which can be moved between open and closed positions at will by rotation of the cartridge in relation to the closure while the latter is in engagement with and restrained against rotation in relation to the forward part of the pen barrel. The barrel, Figs. 1, 3, is in two parts 1, 4 screwed together. The forward part 1 carries a stylographic writing point including a tube 3, wire 17 and a sliding weight 18 in which the wire 17 is mounted. The ink cartridge 6 is closed at the rear end by an endpiece. 7 and at the front end by a wall 8 perforated at 14. The closure member 9 has a generally cylindrical part rotatably mounted in a forwardly-extending collar 10 of the cartridge adjacent to the wall 8, and a tapered portion 11 of generally rectangular crosssection which engages in a correspondingly shaped part 12 of the bore of. the barrel part 1 and forms an ink-tight seal therewith. A channel 15 in the closure member 9 is arranged so that it can be moved into and out of inkfeeding communication with the holes 14 in the wall 8 by relatively rotating the parts 6, 9 through 90 degrees. The pen is loaded with a fresh cartridge in the following way: the barrel parts are unscrewed and a cartridge having the closure member in the position shown i.e. with the channel 15 out of communication with the holes 14, is inserted in the barrel part 1. When the part 11 of the member 9 is firmly engaged in the part 12 of the barrel and thereby secured against rotation the remainder of the cartridge 6 is rotated through 90 degrees to allow ink to flow through the holes 14 and channel 15 into a chamber 16 and thence to the writing point. Projections 20 are arranged at 90 degrees intervals around the periphery of the closure member 9 and snap into recesses in the collar 10 of the cartridge which is made of a resilient synthetic plastic material. When the part-4 of the barrel is screwed on to the part 1 pro- ' jection 13 formed therein abuts against the end-piece 7 of the cartridge and thereby holds the closure member in engagement with the part 12 of the barrel. The weight 18 falls back and rests upon inwardly projecting portions 19 of the barrel part 1 in front of the member 9 when the pen is inverted from the Fig. 1 position. The cartridge may be re-sealed and removed from the pen before it is exhausted by reversing the steps described above. The pen may have a number of interchangeable barrel parts 1, each having a different size of writing point. The closure member 9 may be held against rotation in the barrel part 1 by other methods as by a lug or. lugs on the one part engaging in a groove or grooves on the other. In a modification the barrel parts are secured together by a bayonet catch and a projecting part in the rear barrel portion. 4 engages a groove in the cartridge end piece 17 so as automatically to twist the cartridge through 90 degrees as the barrel parts are assembled. In another modification, Fig. 14, the cartridge closure member 55 has lugs 58 engaging in slots 59 in the barrel part 51 and the cartridge 54 has a bayonet-type connection with the barrel part 51, projections 66 on the cartridge engaging in L-shaped slots 63, 65 in the barrel. As the cartridge is connected to the barrel the flow of ink to the writing point is simultaneously initiated.
