Class 146(3) In a writing instrument, such as a ball-point pen, comprising a barrel component and an inner writing unit both of which are associated to constitute the instrument, and a removable cap, the interengaging surfaces of the cap and barrel, or an ink reservoir and barrel, or both, are made of moulded plastic material, and there is integrally moulded on one of the parts one or more longitudinally disposed ribs or flats. whereby direct interengagement with such mating part is effected by the distortion of the other mating part. As applied to a ball-point pen comprising a barrel 9, cap 10, and a refill writing unit 11, 12, the cap is formed internally with three equally spaced flats which extend from the open end of the cap inwardly with parallel sides and gradually terminate at a point about half way along the cap. As shown in Fig. 5, instead of the flats, there may be either ribs 14, lands 15, or beads 16 in the cap 10. The reservoir 11, Fig. 6, has three equidistantly spaced ribs 16, extending from the shoulder 11a, which fit into an annular recess 9b in the mouth of the barrel; in a modification, the ribs are formed on the inner face of the barrel wall 9a. The depth of engagement of the cap 10 with the barrel 9 may be limited by providing a shoulder 17, Fig. 1, on the barrel 9. To locate the rear end of the reservoir 11 in the barrel and to prevent refills which are too long being used therein, the bore 9a of the barrel may be reduced towards the rear end, or one or more flats 9c, Fig. 1, may be formed in the barrel to serve the same purpose.
