[Class 146 (iii)] In a fountain pen of the kind in which the nib section carries a member provided with an ink duct and adapted to pierce a plug or membrane of rubber-like material closing an ink cartridge, the member is in the form of a hollow needle 7, Fig. 1, cut at an angle to form a sharp cutting edge similar to that of a hypodermic needle, the hole formed in the plug or membrane 6 being so small as to be self-sealing when the needle is withdrawn. The pen casing 1 may be of glass, vulcanite, or synthetic resin and the cartridge of glass, celluloid or cellulose acetate. The cartridge may be divided by a partition 9, Fig. 2, into two compartments each closed by a plug 6, or two separate cartridges secured together end to end may be employed. The pen may have a nib section and needle at each end. To facilitate withdrawal of the needle 7 from the nib section, it may be secured to a bead 20, Fig. 4, frictionally engaging the ink duct 5 in the section and to facilitate passage of ink into the needle, it may be provided with a lateral hole 10.
