[Class 146 (iii)] The nib section of a fountain pen is provided with a hollow needle open at its tip for piercing a stopper or diaphragm sealing an ink containing cartridge, the stopper being of rubber or similar resilient material adapted to form a liquidtight seal round the needle. In, one form, Fig. 1, the pen barrel is in two parts 6, 7, separably connected together by a screw or bayonet connection to allow of the insertion and removal of the ink cartridge which comprises a tube 10 of.glass, celluloid, &c. closed by plugs 11, 12, the plug 11 being of resilient material which is pierced by the hollow needle 3 carried by the nib section 4. The barrel may be transparent or provided with longitudinal slots to allow the ink level in the cartridge to be observed. The plug 12 may be operated as a plunger by an actuating member carried by the barrel so as forcibly to eject the ink from the cartridge. The cartridge may be formed with a transverse partition to hold different coloured inks at each end, and may be reversible in the barrel, or the barrel may have a nib at each end, in which case the caps normally covering the nibs may be formed so that one may be fitted over the other. Fig. 7 shows a pen provided with two side by side nib sections 213, 212 and two ink cartridges 211, 210, the adjacent faces of the sections 213, 212 being formed as racks and engaging a pinion 225 so that as one section with its cartridge is withdrawn into the pen barrel, the other is extended. These movements are effected by a spring member 226 secured to the section 212 and movable in a slot in the barrel by an operating knob 232, the member having a projecting nose 227 which snaps into one or the other of a pair of recesses 230, 231. In a further form, the pen barrel is dispensed with, the nib section being formed as a sleeve to grip the end of the cartridge which acts as a holder for the pen. Instead of split nibs, stylographic marking points may be used. The pen shown in Fig. 7 forms the subject-matter of Specification 578,401.
