Class 146(3) In a propelling pencil having a fore-end rubber eraser, a tube slidable within the pencil barrel houses both the eraser, which is perforated for passage of the lead tube, and a container for spare leads. The pencil shown comprises a lead-carrying tube 5 firmly connected by a rubber insert 7 to an outer tube 6; the lead 8 is advanced by a screw 9 having a fin 13 engaging in a flat channel 12 in a manually rotatable cap 11. An operative eraser 15 and a spare 16, loose on the tube 5, are pressed into the ends of a tube 14 loose in the tube 6; the assembly 14, 15, 16 is manually projected so that the eraser 15 comes beyond the pencil point for use, and is frictionally retained by a spare-lead container 17 blocked between the erasers 15, 16, whose ends 18, 19 resiliently grip the tube 5; the container 17 also serves to centralize the tube 5; spare leads may normally be supplied in containers 17 so that when the ends 18, 19 are worn a new container is available for replacement. A spare lead is obtained from the container 17 in use by advancing the parts 14 ... 17 to the chain-line position shown,. andshaking a single lead from the end 18 whose internal diameter is less than two lead diameters. The erasers 15, 16 may be stiffened by a non-elastic material, e.g. a paper strip 20, pasted round them or by a coating of varnish or both. An operating slider may extend from the tube 14 through a slot in the tube 6.
