Abstract

647,474. Reservoir pens. BORG CORPORATION, G. W. April 14, 1947, No. 9853. Convention date, May 1, 1946. [Class 146 (iii)] A ball-point pen has a ball-housing 17, Fig. 2, comprising a cylindrical part and a conical part the axes of which are inclined to one another, and in which are formed axial ink ducts 21, 22 and 23 respectively which intersect as shown. The ball-housing 17 which is knurled at its inner end and press-fitted into the part 11, Fig. 1, of the barrel has a conical tip the axis 19 of which is inclined to the barrel axis 20 and intersects it at a point beyond the ball. The base of the conical tip lies in a plane making an acute angle with the axis 20, and the end of the barrel 11 is cut so as to lie in this plane which is substantially parallel to the paper when the pen is held in the normal writing position. Three ducts 21, 22, 23 of decreasing size are formed in the housing 17, the latter duct being parallel to the axis 19 and terminating in the ball-seating comprising a short cylindrical wall 24, Fig. 5, spun over at 26 and a tapered wall 25 which provides an annular seating for the ball. A channel 28 in the upper part of the wall 24 and grooves 27 in the wall 25 form passages for the ink. The reservoir consists of a capillary tube 30 of flattened cross-section with circular tubes 31, 32 at its ends. The tube 31 is threaded for detachable connection with the housing 17 and the tube 32 is open at its free end so tha atmospheric pressure is applied to the ink therein, a vent being provided in the part 10 of the barrel for this purpose. The ends of replacement reservoirs are closed by suitable caps which are removed when the reservoir is inserted in the pen. Specifications 564,172 and 573,747 are referred to.
