Abstract

[Also in Group XVII] In a ball-point reservoir pen, the reservoir and the writing extremity are detachably connected and the writing extremity consists of an adaptor 2 and a nib-section 3, the latter being positioned within an axial bore 6 in the adaptor so as to protrude at the writing end and having an enlarged head, flange or collar 8 preventing its forward movement through the adaptor; a member, such as union 10, and having an ink feed duct 12, 13, presses against the rear of the head 8. As shown, the union 10 is screwed at one end into the adaptor and at its other end to the end 17 of the reservoir 1. The construction permits of the pen being disassembled for the replacement of a worn nib-section 3 or exhausted reservoir 1. Capillary devices 15, 19 as described in Specification 650,754 may be provided in the feed-duct 12 and in the mouth of the reservoir respectively so as to prevent the ink receding when the pen parts are separated. In a modification, the union 10 is integral with the reservoir 1 and the parts 1, 2 are locked together either by resilient fingers on the adaptor engaging a circumferential rib on the end of the reservoir or by a lock-nut screwed on the end of the reservoir. The reservoir is of substantial capacity and may be constructed as described in Specification 688,891. Specifications 571,698 and 573,747 also are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes arrangements wherein the nib section is removable through the writing end of the adaptor and wherein the nib section is permanently fixed to the adaptor. In one form, the adaptor is' made of synthetic resin and is moulded around the nib section and the union. In another form, the nib section is held in place by a metal sheath swaged around it and the main part of the writing extremity. An arrangement is also described Fig. 2, Provisional Specification (not shown) wherein capillary plugs are provided in the parts of the ink channel where the reservoir and writing extremity abut. The end of the plug adjacent to the inlet to the nib section is chamfered so as to ensure that the inlet is not closed by the plug. In the construction shown in Fig. 7, a skirt 12<SP>1</SP>f on the writing extremity 3 has pins 20 or 20a engaging bayonet slots 19 in an extension 9f of the reservoir body 1, so as to form a releasable attachment for the parts 1, 3. A union 7f is integral with the adaptor 8f and is split at its free end where it abuts against a resilient sealing washer 22. A second resilient washer 24 is gripped between the parts 8f, 9f. The pen may be slidably mounted in a casing so that the point can be projected to writing position against spring action Fig. 11 of the Provisional Specification, (not shown), a releasable catch being provided to hold the pen in such position. After removal of a writing extremity, the reservoir may be refilled from a collapsable tube which screws into the reservoir end ; the tube has a metal foil sealing disc at its mouth which bursts when the tube is compressed.
