Abstract

876,849. Hose couplings. MELSOM, W. A., and BOWDEN (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Nov. 1, 1957 [Sept. 20, 1956 ; Oct. 29, 1956], Nos. 28817/56 and 32947/56. Class 99(1). In a hose-end coupling an inner member 2 has a smooth externally tapered portion 4 tapering towards the open end of the coupling for insertion into the bore of the hose 1, and a nut 8 is provided with an internal screw-thread 9 which is cylindrical or tapers away from the open end of the coupling to form with the taper portion 4 an annulus which progressively contracts in cross-sectional area away from the open end of the coupling. The nut is rotatable about the member 2 so that the hose is drawn along the member and is progressively squeezed and gripped between the tapered portion and the screw-thread of the nut. The nut may be secured to the member 2 by a wire or rod 10x extending around a passage formed by grooves 6, 10 in the member and nut. Specifications 540,490 and 768,974 are referred to.
