Abstract
892,194. Pipe joints. FREY, C. L. Nov. 11, 1959 [Nov. 12, 1958; Jan. 15, 1959], No. 38174/59. Class 99(1). In a joint comprising a spigot 1 adapted for insertion into the end of a pipe 13 of a plastic, rubber or metal, an outer sleeve 7 and a clamping member 10, the spigot has cylindrical and substantially conical portions 2, 3 and a flange 4, and the sleeve is formed with a cylindrical inner wall and has a circular recess 8. The sleeve is adapted to be moved by the member 10 towards the flange of the spigot so that the conical portion 3 of the spigot forces and compresses the material of the pipe into the recess 8 to thereby form a retaining bead or flange 13a. The components of the joint may be of metal or a plastic. The sleeve and spigot respectively may have threaded internal and external surfaces and be screwed on to and into the pipe, the sleeve having external splines 21, Fig. 12, which co-operate with grooves 23 in the nut to facilitate rotation of the sleeve ; also, the spigot, if of a plastic, may be sheathed with metal or, if of metal, sheathed with a plastic. A gasket 5 is interposed between the spigot and a fitting 14. The nut 10 may be replaced by a clamping flange, and the recess 8, Fig. 15, may be formed by a number of washers 24.
