Abstract

A method of connecting and providing insulation between two tubular parts 2, 4 of a conduit 1, the ends of the two parts having diameters such that the end of one part can fit into the end of the other part with a clearance, comprises fitting the end of the part of smaller diameter into the end of the part of larger with, within the clearance, a sleeve 3 of an electrically insulating material so that the sleeve extends beyond the free ends of the parts 2, 4 and changing the diameter of the end of at least one of the parts in order to clamp the sleeve 3 between the parts. As shown, the sleeve 3 of synthetic rubber or other plastics material is gripped between the sleeve 4 and conduit 1 by expanding the conduit or reducing the sleeve so that adjacent milled or threaded surfaces penetrate into the surfaces of the sleeve 3. The sleeve 4 is formed with a collar 5 which is abutted by a coupling flange 6. In modifications, (a) the flange 6 is integral with the sleeve 4, the latter and conduit 1 being pinned together by a screw of insulating material and there being a rubber gasket between the flange 6 and the coupling flange of an adjacent conduit and a ceramic sleeve within the portion of the insulating sleeve 3 extending beyond the end of the conduit; the flange 6 may be replaced by a nut or the conduit may be flanged, and (b) an insulating sleeve having a collar at each end thereof is gripped between the tubular portion of a valve and an internal sleeve which is expanded radially or, alternatively, by radially compressing the tubular portion.
