Abstract

850,131. Pipe couplings. AUSTIN, C. June 11, 1959 [June 13, 1958], No. 18976/58. Class 99(1). A coupling for flexible composite conduits having an inner flexible tube 13, e.g. of polytetrafluoroethylene, and a sheathing 18, e.g. of braided wire, comprises a spigot 1 having a bore 2 and a fixed abutment 4 intermediate the ends thereof, an external tapered sleeve 12 surrounding the spigot and positioned against the abutment, and a nut 5 surrounding the spigot and provided with a screw-threaded shank 6 for engagement with an internally tapered body 8. On connection of the coupling with the conduit, the tube is positioned between the spigot and the sleeve and the sheathing is disposed between the sleeve and the tapered part of the body whereby on co-operation of the body and nut the tube and sheathing are firmly held by a wedge action within the coupling. The sleeve may be solid, formed with a single longitudinal slit, or provided with a number of slits which extend alternately from either end of the sleeve. Grooves may be provided in the reduced diameter portion 3 of the spigot and/or the internal surface of the sleeve. In modifications, (a) the internal surface of the nut 5, Fig. 7, is tapered at 23 to co-operate with a taper on the sleeve, and the sheath 18 is engaged between a shoulder 25 on the body 24 and the larger diameter end of the sleeve, (b) the sleeve is longitudinally tapered from the middle towards the ends thereof, and (c) the body 8, Fig. 9, has a flange 31 engaged by the flange 30 of an outer sleeve 29 screwed on to the nut 5.
