Abstract

860,698. Intake silencers. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. July 2, 1959 [July 4, 1958], No. 21508/58. Class 7(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A charge air filter and silencer comprises a casing 1 having a removable cover 2 which is provided with an inlet 9 and curved inlet passage 10 of progressively increasing cross-section in the direction of air flow. The passage 10 opens into a space of sufficient volume to ensure a quick drop in air velocity and consequent tendency for solids to separate from the air stream and fall into the sump 23 over the baffle 24. A filter element is disposed concentrically within the casing 1 and comprises inner and outer walls 14 and 15 having a filter medium 17, e.g. pleated porous paper, disposed between and the top sealed by a cover 21. Air entering the casing passes upwardly through the annular space 16 through the filter medium 17 into the spaces 22 and 20 for discharge through the pipe 7. The inlet 9 and passage 10 may be positioned below the filter element with the sump 23 disposed below the casing 1. The casing 1 may be oval shaped in plan and have two inlets 9 and 10 and the filter element may be similarly shaped and have an imperforate outer and top wall and an inner wall formed of filtering medium. The inlet 9 may be disposed in any position along the passage 10.
