Abstract

947,987. Cyclone separators; gas filters. FARR CO. Aug. 20, 1962, No. 31847/62. Headings BIT and B2P. A filter assembly 10 for separating solid or liquid particles from a gaseous fluid comprises a first stage filter consisting of a plurality of cyclone separator units 15, Fig. 2, and a second stage filter consisting of a number of tubular pleated filter elements 40, e.g. of paper, closed at one end by a common end wall 47 and connected together at the other end by a sealing flange 44 formed of a rubber-like material and provided with a plurality of openings 45 each connecting the gas discharge outlet 20 of one of the cyclone separator units with the interior of one of the filter elements. As shown in Fig. 1, the filter assembly 10 may be attached to the carburetter 11 of an I.C. engine 12 for purifying intake air. The cyclone units having axial inlets 19 are mounted between walls 16, 17 of a chamber 18 from which separated particles and a controlled amount of air are removed through a conduit 22 connected to the engine exhaust 13. The two stages of the filter assembly are secured together by releasable clamps 29, The filter elements 40 form a filter cartridge 30 secured in a chamber 31 by means of a peripheral bead 51 on the flange 44 clamped between the wall 17 and angle members 50 welded to the chamber walls. The cartridge may also be supported by a channel member sequred to the wall 34 of the chamber. Each filter element is reinforced by a string 41 and is connected in a mould to the sealing flange 44 and end wall 47 which may be formed from a solution or dispersion of a plastic material such as an organisol or plastisol. Filtered air from the elements 40 passes through openings 80 in the end wall 47 and is led by a connection 35 from the interior of the chamber 31 to the carburetter 11.
